Expert presentation at it-sa 2024 by Edgar Reinke, Vice President R&D at Damovo

Damovo is represented at it-sa with three expert presentations that address key topics in IT security. Each presentation offers practical information and solutions that companies can directly incorporate into their security strategies.

In his presentation, Edgar Reinke, Vice President R&D at Damovo, will discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with the transformation to a modern security architecture. He will show how Damovo supports its customers with customised managed services along this journey. We consider Security Service Edge (SSE) to be an important part of the overall security technology stack and discuss how it is embedded in a comprehensive security strategy.

We asked Edgar a few questions in advance about the key aspects of the presentation.

Please introduce yourself and your role at Damovo.

Since the foundation of Netfarmers GmbH in 2005 and its integration as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Damovo in 2016, I have been responsible for the strategic development and implementation of innovative technologies. Together with my highly qualified team, we are driving forward the evaluation and integration of new technologies and continuously expanding Damovo’s professional services portfolio. Our expertise includes, among other things, IT security, enterprise networks, unified communication and contact centres. We act as technical consultants and support our customers in planning and designing future-proof solutions.

What challenges do you currently see in the area of cybersecurity that you would like to address in your presentation?

The classic perimeter has long been a thing of the past. A company’s users, devices, applications and networks can no longer be restricted behind a single firewall. This increases the attack surface, while protection becomes increasingly fragmented and difficult to control. Security Service Edge (SSE) addresses this issue by consolidating the perimeter (in the cloud) and driving the transition to Zero Trust, based on the core principles of ‘least privilege’, explicit verification and the ‘assume breach’ principle. SSE is therefore not an isolated solution, but an integral part of a comprehensive security strategy.

Who is your presentation aimed at?

The presentation does not provide a deep technical insight into SSE and does not serve as vendor marketing. Instead, it shows how Damovo advises customers on the transformation to a modern security architecture and supports them with tailored managed services. SSE is considered as part of the overall security technology stack and evaluated as part of a comprehensive security strategy.

Why should visitors to it-sa definitely listen to your presentation?

We don’t look at security from a purely IT perspective. This ensures that our solutions and services are always aligned with a company’s individual requirements and goals. While the ROI of security investments is difficult to quantify, we clearly qualify its value: with us, you achieve a security strategy that offers real added value for your company.

How do you think cybersecurity will develop in the next few years? What trends do you see?

In view of the multitude of requirements – from technologies to compliance and supply chains to threat intelligence and systematic control – cybersecurity must become a ‘team sport’. This applies not only within a company, but also between different organisations. Initial approaches for collaborative solutions include platforms for exchanging risk ratings or threat intelligence.

An appropriate level of maturity in the systematic control of security must be established across the industry. The current complex legal framework is an obstacle to this; a consolidation would bring much-needed simplification.

Practical support, for example from industry-specific communities, is essential, especially for smaller companies or those with limited resources. Building and managing their own state-of-the-art security technology stack is hardly affordable for these companies. Using security services via cloud solutions and platforms will therefore be indispensable in the medium term.
